Wake Up! The World is Burning

Sat Apr 15, 2006 at 02:24:25 AM PDT

While I certainly understand the constant focus on Iraq (and to a lesser extent, Afghanistan), many other parts of the world are burning.

Does anyone care?  I do.  And I hope you do too.

Al-Qaeda and the Internet

Fri Apr 14, 2006 at 06:30:01 AM PDT

There's been something that's been nudging me at the back of my skull for a long time, saying something's very wrong here.

O'Reilly Attacks War on Paganism

Thu Apr 13, 2006 at 03:48:52 AM PDT

If my head wasn't exploding, the irony of this would be funny.

Yesterday Bill O'Reilly had a guest named Jon Meacham, deploring the "War on Easter", saying amongst other things:

"What do you think Benjamin Franklin and George Washington and Thomas Jefferson and James Madison would have thought about the ACLU, all right, Pledge of Allegiance, no God, Christmas icons out of the public arena? What do you think those guys would have thought about that?"

The Immigrants' Tale

Tue Apr 11, 2006 at 11:57:08 PM PDT

I myself am an immigrant, an American who has moved to Romania, and I know what it's like to queue in line for official papers, be far from my home and culture, to speak a minority language and be overwhelmed sometimes by a feeling of alienation.

However what I want to write about is not my story, but the story of the many documented and undocumented people I've known in the United States.

Bush to Pardon Jonathan Pollard?

This might be huge.

A Letter of Marque

Fri Apr 07, 2006 at 09:37:43 AM PDT

If you look at that "quaint" document, the Constitution of the United States of America, in Article One, you will see the powers of the Congress enumerated.

In particular, Section 8.  And if you look at Clause 11, it states that Congress "shall have the power"

To declare war, grant letters of marque and reprisal, and make rules concerning captures on land and water;

It was this blog which got me to wondering what exactly a Letter of Marque and Reprisal was.

The OC: Making Money By Tricking People To Register Republican

Thu Apr 06, 2006 at 01:19:23 AM PDT

I thought this was originally an April Fool's article as it was posted on April 1, but sadly it isn't.  From the Orange County Register (California):

More than 100 Orange County residents who thought they were simply signing petitions to cure breast cancer, punish child molesters or build schools were duped into registering as Republicans, an Orange County Register investigation found.

Do We Have Rights or Just Privileges?

Tue Apr 04, 2006 at 01:22:51 AM PDT

Poor old Jose Padilla.  About the only thing going good for him lately is that the media has been showing some accurate images of him, unlike the well-known doctored photo from 2002, which was "re-touched" to appear more menacing.

Now at least he looks like his real self, wearing his orange prison suit for the 4th year in a row.

Let's Stop Calling People "Hispanics"

Mon Apr 03, 2006 at 09:19:14 AM PDT

There's apparently quite a furor going on in the U.S. about people who flew a Mexican (or other nation) flag during recent protests about proposed immigration laws.

I'll leave the discussion of that to others, but the numerous mention of the ethnicity of the protesters is something I need to talk about.  Specifically I am referring to the term Hispanic, probably one of the most misused words in America.

To begin with, there's actually no such thing as an ethnic "Hispanic".  That is to say, your neighbor Pedro Gonzales can walk across the border to Mexico or drive to Argentina or fly to France and he will instantaneously cease to be Hispanic, in the sense of an ethnicity.  Pedro can sail a boat down the coast of Mozambique, amble along the great wall of China and ride in a hot air balloon over Indonesia but it is only when he steps foot inside the United States that he becomes "Hispanic".

Cutting the Silver Cord

Tue Mar 28, 2006 at 11:15:33 PM PDT

Years and years ago, I had someone very close to me call in the middle of the night.  She was contemplating doing the unthinkable, staring down the barrel of self-annihilation, ending her life.  She called me because she was desperate.  Her life was difficult, miserable and full of pain but she didn't want to end it, she just wanted to know why she shouldn't end it.

Lawsuit: USDA opposes testing for Mad Cow disease

Mon Mar 27, 2006 at 01:11:33 AM PDT

I was reading the Cattle News (yep) when I came across an interesting item:

Creekstone Farms Premium Beef, at a news conference Thursday in Washington, D.C., announced that it has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to get permission to voluntarily test all of its cattle for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).

R-CALF USA supports Creekstone in this effort because voluntary testing for BSE likely would help reopen and maintain certain export markets for U.S. beef, which in turn, would certainly benefit the thousands of independent cattle producers this organization represents," said R-CALF USA CEO Bill Bullard. "The U.S. economy is based on free enterprise, and Creekstone is simply trying to meet the demands of its customers - a key objective for any successful business."

Almost two years ago, R-CALF USA called on USDA to permit cutting-edge packers like Creekstone Farms to voluntarily test for BSE 100 percent of the animals processed there.

The Fall of the House of Taylor

Sun Mar 26, 2006 at 07:39:32 AM PDT

I must say I'm very pleased to learn that Charles Taylor's cushy exile in Nigeria is coming to an end and he will soon be tried on war crimes in Sierra Leone (with little thanks to the Bush administration).

I'm not the biggest fan of United Nations special tribunals, but in the case of Sierra Leone it is high time for Charles Taylor to face the consequences of his actions.

PDB: March 24, 2006

Fri Mar 24, 2006 at 03:34:30 AM PDT

What follows is my "PDB", which is similar to what George Bush gets every day, except mine is all from public sources and is a bit longer than one double-spaced page.

I believe that the best electorate is an informed electorate, and that must include a knowledge of what's going on around the world.

I read approximately 50 newspapers every morning and report what I find there, with an emphasis on foreign or international events.  You will however not find information about Iraq or the Israeli/Palestinian situation, the first because it is amply reported elsewhere and the latter because it is too contentious.

Events that I feel are well-covered elsewhere are not included for brevity.

Down The Memory Holes

Wed Mar 22, 2006 at 10:08:21 AM PDT

What always makes me laugh, in a bitter and angry way, is how supporters of the Bush administration defend every intrusion of privacy, from the PATRIOT Act to warrantless NSA spying on Americans, with the canard that it's ok because they've got "nothing to hide".

Yet the Bush administration has been hiding things and it all started way before 9/11, so that tired old cliche about the attacks "changing everything" does not apply.

Bush Administration Works Hard to PROTECT Iran

Sun Mar 19, 2006 at 01:30:06 PM PDT

I'm sure you are familiar with the saber-rattling from the Bush administration about Iran, the "military option still on the table" kind of talk.  But what you may not know is that the Bush administration has been working very hard to protect Iran.  Unbelievable but true.

Balochistan: The War You Don't Know About, But Should

Fri Mar 17, 2006 at 10:41:12 AM PDT

I realize everyone probably is focused primarily on the new air assault in Iraq.  That being said, there's another ongoing conflict with deep implications, including the possible future strikes against Iran.  Below is my analysis of that.

The Mysterious Case of Peter Waldron

It is time to tell the mysterious tale of one Peter Waldron, American citizen.
